I’m a Heinz snob. I blame my mom for only ever buying us Heinz ketchup and only ever making our sloppy joes with Heinz brand sloppy joe sauce in the can. There’s just something in Heinz ketchup and sloppy joe sauce that no other brand has. It’s a tangy flavor of some kind. Anyway, I digress. Somewhere along the way, they stopped selling the Heinz brand sloppy joe sauce (at least here, anyway) so now the only option is Manwich sauce, which just isn’t the same and I’ve never liked it. But I love sloppy joes, so what’s a girl to do? Make her own recipe that tastes like the Heinz brand, of course.
After serious experimentation, I think I’ve got it. Or at least I’ve got something that tastes so wonderful it doesn’t matter whether it tastes like that beloved childhood version or not because I love it and am going to eat it anyway. I really do think, though, that this has that certain tangy quality that I’ve been looking for, and I believe it’s from a combination of the yellow mustard and apple cider vinegar. Whatever it is, these taste amazing. The fact that they’re done in the crock pot makes it even better, because, well, it’s the crock pot! Set it, forget it, come back later with your rolls and you have dinner. What’s not to love?
